How I'd Stop Missing Calls as a One-Truck Contractor
Prices last checked on vendor sites: October 14, 2026
When it's just you and a truck, the phone rings at the worst times: on a ladder, in a crawlspace, or halfway through a bid with a homeowner. Here is the setup I'd put in place, cheapest step first. Tool prices were checked on vendor pricing pages on October 14, 2026.
Step 1: Work out what missed calls cost you
Pull up your call log for the last two weeks and count the calls you didn't pick up and never called back the same day. Multiply that by how often a call turns into a job and by your average job value. Use your own numbers, not an industry average. That figure is your budget ceiling for fixing the problem.
Step 2: Forward only the calls you miss
You don't have to give up your number or let a robot answer every call. Set "forward when busy / no answer" on your cell to the AI service. Your phone still rings first, and the AI gets only what slips past you. OnCrew describes its own product this way, and Jobber Receptionist supports forwarding after a set number of rings.
Step 3: Pick a plan sized to one truck
| Option | Price | Why it fits a solo operator |
|---|---|---|
| OnCrew Starter | $49/mo | 100 answered calls, emergency alerts, no setup fee, 14-day trial with no card to start |
| Rosie Professional | $49/mo | 250 minutes, message taking, texts an appointment link, 7-day trial |
| Jobber Receptionist | $29/mo add-on | If you already run on Jobber, it books into your existing schedule |
Step 4: Decide what counts as urgent
Write down the three or four phrases that mean "call me now," like "water everywhere" or "no heat." Set them up as emergency or transfer rules (OnCrew's emergency alerts, Jobber's keyword transfers, Rosie's live transfers on Scale). Everything else can wait until you're off the ladder.
Step 5: Call back fast
The AI captures the lead, but you still have to win the job. Block 15 minutes at lunch and at the end of the day to work through the summaries. A same-day callback beats a perfect one tomorrow.
Step 6: Review after 30 days
Read the transcripts. Check what callers asked that the AI couldn't answer, and add those answers to its FAQ or knowledge base. If you're regularly going over your plan, compare the next tier's price with what you're paying in overage.
